ANTI-DUMPING DUTY RAISES CONCERNS

Ceramics

In November 2012, the European Commission Directorate-General for Trade imposed a provisional Anti-dumping duty, which applies to imports of ceramic tableware and kitchenware originating in China.
The aim was to promote the production of ceramic kitchen and tableware within the EU, but the fear is that it will instead impact negatively on the promotional industry. The EU mainly produces high end products, and it is ill equipped to cope with the high volumes and low costs required by the promotional industries.
Business in the ceramic industry could drop as clients use other products to avoid the extra duty, and there could be damage to the industry as a whole, if clients resort to other forms of promotion.
The European Promotional Products Association (EPPA) has filed an official comment stating these concerns and has been heard officially by the Trade Injury Team, which is in charge of the anti-dumping investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the European Commission will recommend to the European Council either to impose the measures definitively or to terminate the case. The Council will make its final decision on May 22.

WAGES SPIRAL OUT OF CONTROL IN CHINA

Chinese Wages

In China, the tendency of rising wages remains the same as in the last a few years. It seems to be increasing even more this year in some areas. Employers need to pay more for overtime and welfare to attract workers. In some cases, employers even need to buy air tickets for the workers to entise them back to work after the long holiday.

BPMA RESEARCH 2013 - WE REMEMBER A GIFT

BPMA research

Conducted by independent research company Relevant Insights LLC, the survey looked at the major channels through which brands and companies advertise their products and services, including TV, radio, online, direct mail, newspapers, magazines and promotional merchandise. The results provide great insight and may impact on marketing spend in the future.
94 per cent of us remember who gave us a promotional item or the product advertised after we have had it for six months and 39 per cent of us are more likely to use a business that has given us a promotional product when the need for the advertised product or service arises, rather than a similar business that has not given us anything. Two thirds of us like to hang on to such gifts for more than six months and 44 per cent keep them for over one year. More than half of respondents (54 per cent) said they would go and get a promotional product that was being handed out, provided it was useful to them. 'Likability' is also important in this decision.
Nearly half (46 per cent) of people questioned said that they like receiving free products that have an advertising message, and half would like to receive such items more often. 98 per cent think that promotional products are not a waste of money.
